East wall of Monk Bar

Visited 19 March 2006

York has many walking tours, including a tour of historic toilets -- one of which is in this building that claims to be the "oldest surviving private loo"  in town.  (Apparently, Yorkers don't remodel bathrooms as much as we do in the States.)  Monk Bar was once on the edge of the moat -- don't ask.  The Romans built sewers but medieval folk were probably more plumbing challenged.  The moat, in fact, was probably a ditch without water.  (A moat by any other name would smell as sweet.)
