The Great York Pub and Church Test

Visited 19 March 2006

Here's your test:  You're looking from Monk Bar into Old York.  Can you see a church?  (Certainly if you were able to get to the top of the four-story Monk Bar, you could.)  But where's the pub? Hint: The Royal York sign may designate one in the center of the picture but you'll need your magnifying glass to see it.

Actually, you are looking at Goodramgate street (named after the Viking Guthrum).  It's chock full of restaurants.  Long before that it was the site of the imperial palace where the Roman Emperor Severus lived (and died in 211).  Being from Italy, he hated the winters here.
