The Foss River

Visited 19 March 2006

The simple bridge in the distance was built in 1931 over the Foss, the smaller of York's rivers.  Architecturally controlled old York is on the right with urban clutter edging it at the right.

You don't see walls on this stretch as the rivers were felt to be an effective barrier by the Romans and the Anglo/Saxons who replaced them.  This didn't stop the Vikings who sailed up the larger river (the Ouse) in their shallow-draft longboats.  They renamed the Anglian town of Eoferwick as Jorvik and its been a variant of that ever since.
