Something fishy About That Salmon Building

Visited 8-12 June, 2006

Below is a rather ordinary brick building, the 1926 Salmon Tower, with an extraordinary bas relief entrance which I noticed as I stood in front of the NY public library and drank a bookstore-purchased cup of coffee.  (I've found it easier to drink a cup of coffee than to finish reading most books.)

Here's a close-up of the 11 figures in the top row.  (Click on the picture to see an enlargement).

The bas relief carvings on the columns on each side of the doorway represent the months.  Of course, we had to take a picture of June.  I'm not sure she's bursting all over, but those two boys had to come from somewhere.

I found out later why this building had this strange attraction over me.  While it's largest tenant is New York University, it is also home to Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.  Those strange bas relief figures at the top of the doorway are probably her staff getting ready for a party.  It probably takes 11 people for her to get it right, just check out any copy of Simple Living.  (Inside joke: Phil will say I stole that line from him, or would it be Alice?)
