The Foss Swamp

Visited 19 March 2006

Shortly after the bridge in the last picture, the Foss is bordered by a swamp also thought to provide a natural defense (hence no walls here either).  Is a swamp by any other name as sour?  This was known as the King's Fishpool of Fosse.  The swamp was larger but has been drained somewhat over the years.  The Romans built their legionary fort near here since the site's two rivers provided access to a region with little transportation infrastructure.
